Abstract During the injection of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) for CO capture and storage (CCS) operations, near-well (including casing, cement, rock around it) can undergo several thermal loadings. These loadings significantly increase or decrease pore pressure thus lead to mechanical failure cement sheath formation. When these failures appear in caprock, they compromise integrity site. The understanding thermo-mechanical behaviour a potential caprock shale is, therefore, great importance success CCS operations. In this paper, experiments were performed on Pierre II shale, under confining initial pressures comparable field conditions.
